Green Energy Storage: partnerships, research and flow battery development in 2018
2018 is marking an important phase in the development of Green Energy Storage. Over the past few months, we have strengthened collaborations with international industrial and research partners, advanced our Research & Development activities, and started delivering our first pre-commercial batteries.
This progress is supported by a highly specialised team and by our commitment to developing energy storage systems that are increasingly efficient, competitive and capable of supporting the growing deployment of renewable energy sources.
New partnerships for flow battery development
Green Energy Storage’s growth also relies on building a network of scientific and industrial partners with complementary expertise.
ICL and bromine electrolytes
GES has established a partnership with ICL, an Israeli group active in the chemical industry and bromine research.
The collaboration focuses on the battery components involving bromine electrolytes, combining industrial expertise with Green Energy Storage’s research activities.
DIFFER and the ColorFlow project
Green Energy Storage has also established a partnership with the DIFFER – Dutch Institute for Fundamental Energy Research, a Dutch research centre specialising in energy research.
The partnership secured a Dutch government grant for the ColorFlow programme, focused on the study of new organic chemistries and the development of materials for organic flow batteries designed for electrical energy storage.
The project strengthens GES’s research activities on materials and chemical solutions for energy storage technologies.
Collaboration with Manica
Another new partner is Manica, a Trentino-based company specialising in copper sulphate processing, with which Green Energy Storage has started a collaboration in the field of Research & Development.
Energy storage and electric mobility: the N.E.Mo. Consortium
Green Energy Storage’s activities are also expanding into the integration of energy storage and electric mobility.
Sharengo, Green Energy Storage and Materials Mates Italia have signed an agreement to establish the Nuova Energia Mobile – N.E.Mo. Consortium, focused on applied research into the integration of the energy sector with electric and sustainable mobility.
Its objectives include developing solutions to give electric vehicle batteries a second life and exploring energy storage and electricity grid balancing services.
Research and development: more compact stacks, greater efficiency and new patents
Alongside these partnerships, the Green Energy Storage R&D team continues to advance the company’s battery technology.
Research activities are focused on improving battery performance by reducing stack size, increasing efficiency and chemical density, and progressively lowering system costs.
The team is also working on new solutions intended to be protected through patents, with the goal of expanding the potential applications of the technology and improving its competitiveness.
New shareholders join Green Energy Storage
Green Energy Storage’s growth also involves the company’s corporate structure.
Engineer Mario Mascolo and engineer Maria Elena Cappello have joined the company, together with Hofima S.p.A., a financial holding company with an industrial focus and investments in the chemical sector.
The addition of new expertise and investors supports the company’s technological and industrial development.
H2 — First pre-commercial batteries and market development
Green Energy Storage is also beginning to translate its research activities into concrete applications.
GES is delivering and installing its first series of pre-commercial batteries as part of activities related to Horizon 2020 and collaborations with Sorgenia and Romande Energie.
These activities are complemented by a battery order for a MIUR-funded project in Calabria, developed together with Enel Distribuzione.
Scientific research, industrial partnerships and the first field applications therefore represent complementary steps in the development of Green Energy Storage’s energy storage solutions.
