Frontier technology, long-duration energy storage, sustainability and research are among the topics discussed by
Salvatore Pinto, President of Green Energy Storage, in an interview published in issue 3/2022 of
Energia ed Economia, the newsletter of the
Italian Association of Energy Economists (AIEE).
The interview explores GES's technological development and the
IPCEI Batteries 2 project, focused on a new solution for
stationary energy storage based on a hybrid hydrogen/liquid architecture.
A technology for long-duration energy storage
In his conversation with AIEE, Salvatore Pinto describes Green Energy Storage's solution as a technology designed to address some of the limitations of conventional batteries and traditional flow batteries.
The GES platform is based on
hybrid hydrogen/liquid chemistry and a proprietary architecture designed for
long-duration energy storage, an increasingly important requirement for managing the variability of renewable energy generation.
The features discussed in the interview include the decoupling of energy and power typical of flow batteries, system scalability for stationary applications and a targeted storage duration of
8 hours or more.
Raw materials, safety and environmental sustainability
Another central topic is the
raw-material supply chain. The ability to combine different redox molecules within a common technological platform is presented as a way to reduce dependence on specific commodities and mitigate supply risks.
The interview also places strong emphasis on sustainability. The GES project focuses on
component recyclability, ease of assembly and disassembly, and raw-material availability, following an approach based on circular economy principles.
The battery is also designed to operate at
room temperature, avoiding the need for auxiliary thermal management systems and contributing to the safety characteristics discussed in the interview.
IPCEI Batteries 2 and Green Energy Storage's research journey
The
IPCEI Batteries 2 project represents a new phase in Green Energy Storage's research and development journey and is focused on the development of the hybrid hydrogen/liquid flow battery.
The interview also looks back at previous GES research activities, from the prototypes developed through
GREENERNET to the
COLORFLOW project with DIFFER and
ComESto, focused on integrating renewable generation, energy storage and intelligent energy management.
The full interview with Salvatore Pinto is available in the
April–May 2022 issue of Energia ed Economia.
